Letter from IFYE Foundation President, Norm Bauer

Fall 2007

Greetings from the IFYE Foundation,

As we end a successful year for 4-H exchanges—and thank you for your continued support—we look ahead to 2008. Foundation support during 2007 to exchanges and orientation amounted to $16,396.
The recipients are noted in the enclosed 2007 Annual Report. Your continued support has allowed the Foundation to partially finance exchange programs for all those who made requests in the past year.

Confusion continues to exist regarding the responsibilities of the Association and the Foundation. Neither the Association nor the Foundation is a program manager.

The Association is responsible to facilitate exchanges and the orientation of out-bounds and inbounds.Michigan hosted the 2007 orientation and has volunteered to host it again in 2008.

The Foundation’s purpose is to provide financial support to exchanges. This support is funded through grants which have included orientation programs.

Some interesting achievements by the students participating in the 2006-2007 Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) program, managed by WorldWise Exchange Services, include:

  • Seventh in the Kentucky State Oral Prose Competition.
  • Received all A’s and a math award.
  • Performed a solo saxophone piece at the Spring Concert and was elected senior prom queen.
  • Selected as a member for the State Forensics team.
  • A debate team member, first place district and fourth place regional extemporaneous speaker.
  • A member of the soccer team which placed fourth in state championship games.
  • Served as grand Marshall for the High School homecoming.
  • Taught her HS choir some Russian songs that they performed on a trip to Washington DC and NY.

I am sure those from the USA to other countries also have stories and experiences to tell. We trust that you have invited a recent exchangee to speak to your group about their time in another culture. This encourages others to participate in an exchange too, once they see and hear from someone who has had an international experience.

States will again have the opportunity in 2008 to provide exchange experiences for 4-H youth who are 14-19 years of age. Opportunities also exist for those older than 19. First, the state 4-H leader must approve the exchange. Second, a person older than 19 must participate with the intent of assisting with youth development in the host country. Although WorldWise is coordinating the 14-19 year group to Finland, other opportunities exist, but must meet specific requirements.

For the IFYE Foundation to continue to support these exchange activities we need your continued help. To date, we have been able to provide the requested amount to all those who have submitted grants for financial support. As the requests increase in number or dollar amount, we may be limited by the funds received.

The members of the IFYE Foundation Board are grateful for your past support and trust that your contributions to this campaign will be generous and provide opportunities for many exchange activities.

In the true IFYE Spirit,

Norman Bauer, President
